Kona-Big Week

Kona had a huge week here with us. First he got neutered as required of all rescue dogs in Los Angeles. Kona was a little groggy when I picked him up but he recovered just fine and was great about not trying to pull out his stitches. Next he kept me company as pulled his first all-nighter at the studio while I mixed a film. He didn’t quite make it through the night but he didn’t have the help of cappuccinos:) He was still good company.

Kona had a visit with an orthopedic specialist later in the week and we rewarded his bravery with a trip to the beach. Unfortunately there was no swimming allowed because of his neuter stitches but he was very happy to walk in the sand.

Kona is loving the yard and is very happy to hang out while we catch up on some fall gardening.

He enjoyed lunch on Venice Beach boardwalk and dinner in Santa Monica followed by a stroll along the bluffs.

Kona was very scared when he first came to us but he has progressed wonderfully in the last 2 weeks. The boys have bonded and are best buddies now…a few treats helped too.

It’s wonderful to see the progress Kona has made in such a short time. He’s still working on building his confidence in new situations but he has come so far from his first days of belly crawling and trying to make himself so small as if he wanted to disappear (quite a heartbreaking sight). We knew he had the spirit of a Golden just waiting to shine and there’s nothing better than to hear the thwack of his tail and see that big smile when we say his name now. This is what fostering is all about. If you have ever thought about helping dogs in need, please consider fostering. The rewards are many for your soul and those you help find forever homes.

  1. Hey Kona, M&S,
Hooray for us.. We’ve read all the previous posts up to here even though we were too late to post comments on a few of them. We’re working from old to new to keep the continuity straight. Kona seems to be kinda like Old Bear Dog (OBD) was when he was first adopted. He would lay in a corner facing the wall and all tucked up into a ball. It took a while for hi m to come around. He had been abused by a woman and it was about 1 year until he really warmed up to mom. he was good with dad after a month or so. OBD is the name we use for mom’s email (OBDRESCUE) and for our adoption contracts. It IS a GReat feeling to watch these guys be re-awakened and re-born. Y’all are doing a GReat job.

  2. I want to know if I can come and live with you? So beautiful. Then I read of Kona’s belly crawl and my heart broke and I felt selfish knowing he deserves and needs all that you provide. So wonderful for all of you.

There is nothing like a golden sleeping. They actually appear to melt into melt into the floor!!!

  3. What a love Kona is! And, looking at all of the past fosters you have had. Wonderful photos and tales.
We followed Spencer. And, adored him. We lost our Golden Honey to cancer in April, as I think you know.
We now have another golden, Sierra Rose. Watching her grow each day is wonderful. And, we are also hoping to be a foster home for goldens, once little SR is a bit older, and our yard feels safe and welcoming.

    Great to visit your site!!!
    Hugs and snaggle-tooth kisses,
    Sierra Rose and her mom

  4. Hi Michelle,

Thanks so much for the information on camera settings etc. I’ve always love your photos since Spencer’s days. The photos are very nice and they speak a lot of words. I am still finding my way around my camera (Canon 400D) and I’m still confused with the camera language and the technical terms. Anyway, I LOVE LOVE your photos!

    Cheers.

    Vanessa

PS: Just wondering although this was quite sometime back ago; we’ve sent you a card (from Almost Heaven Golden Retriever). Did you get it?

    • HIi Vanessa,
Wow, you have a great camera! You’ll find all the technical stuff will “click” one day. Thanks again for your kind comments on my photos too, I love taking pictures, especially of dogs, architecture and nature. We did get a few cards from AHGRR in memory of Spencer, thank you so much. They didn’t give names but it said “a generous donation was made in Spencer’s memory”. We were very happy that other rescue dogs could get some help because of Spencer.

  5. oh i love his smile!

the pictures of him against the greenery looks really nice.
probably it’s the color… the gold against the green.
and the dried leaves complement it even more!

  6. What great adventures to go on!!! Wait until you can swim in the water, that is when the real fun begins.

    Keep smilin’ and tail waggin’.

  7. First, living in CA must be like living in paradise. My sister lives in Santa Ana and I envy her the great weather, etc. Living here in northern MI we’ll have a colorful fall and then months of snow…sigh.

Second, yes, I’ve heard so much, and too much, about reality shows. What I found out is that there is NO reality?

Third, I’ve fostered and always fail ending up keeping my furry orphans. Currently I do quite a bit for our local shelter and am letting the “younger” kids have a go at it. Luckily we have such a good shelter and a not-so-bad place to live considering our county government regulated that ours will be no-kill which is almost unheard of for a small town.

I can’t imagine how my heart would break to see a Golden with its spirit broken. What a sad, sad sight. People are such ****** and should be ******.
