Creepy Critter.

mantis.gifYesterday  there was a praying mantis in the yard all day. First it was on the patio table. It turned brown trying to camouflage itself. It worked because I thought it was a leaf until I looked closer. The humans put it on a branch and moved it to the bushes at dinner time. Somehow it ended up on a light in the yard. It turned green and stayed there all night. It was watching me, every move I made. I tried to sneak up on it and it turned its head so fast and just stared at me. It kind of started to creep me out when it was still there this morning and still staring at me as I played ball. I know  it’s good for our garden, eating lots of other bugs but I wish it would stop staring at me…that’s just rude!

  1. I love them and like to get them on my hand and talk to them. They have good stories to tell. Did you know when they hatch that they are so tiny and clear you can really miss them? About a few weeks later they begin to have more color, making them less transparent. It is illegal to hurt or kill them. They used to be on the endangered species list, but I don’t think they are anymore.

I always look for the ones in my yard, every year. They are good luck for your yard/home and most of them are girls. She is staring at you because she is curious, and because you are interesting and handsome.

Besides the bees disappearing, I haven’t seen but one cricket and no grasshoppers at all. Please take care of your Praying Mantis . Beautiful photograph. Perhaps you should ask her name.

Congratulations on your award. You’re the best Spencer!

  2. Hi Spencer!
Did you ask him if he wanted to play ball? Maybe he just wanted a friend & knew you were really cool & wanted to hang out with a cool boy… Otherwise, maybe you are right…he’s just creepy!

  3. Man – I would get annoyed too! I get annoyed with those things that jump and make noise, my mom calls em crickets I think. I try to eat them cuz they get on my nerves and then mom starts yelling that I shouldn’t eat crickets. Geesh – she gets worked up over the littlest things! Oh yeah, DON’T try to eat that thing that keeps staring at you – my mom says it’s endangered (like we care, right?!?!).
Just try to ignore it and maybe it will go away ;-)
    Love,
    Maggie May (the puppy-doodles)
