Today seems the perfect day for a particular story about Kona…When we first adopted him, I found it difficult to get Kona to respond to basic commands….sit, stay, come. Then one day it dawned on me; Kona may not understand English. So I tried giving him a few commands in Spanish, but no response from Kona en español either. Undeterred, we persevered in our therapy dog training and Kona eventually came to understand all commands in English. Then, one day during our pet therapy rounds at the hospital, a man we were visiting with told his daughter to sit down…in Spanish. Before the girl even moved, Kona instantly performed the perfect sit. The whole family looked at us in surprise and then excitedly began asking Kona to do different things in Spanish, all of which he performed perfectly. It turned out my accent was so bad, he couldn’t understand me but he is completely fluent in Spanish. So today we’re celebrating with our bilingual pup…Happy Cinco de Mayo!
What a cute story!
